Denial Management: A Dosimetrist’s Role in a Successful Program

Payer denials are a reality in healthcare today, and the lack of an effective denial management program can be detrimental to the financial health of a practice. Missing or incomplete radiation oncology documentation is a common error reported by Medicare reviewers, which can be avoided by understanding the key documentation elements required for each code. The appeals process may be the responsibility of billing office staff; however, input and assistance by clinical staff members can prove to be beneficial in ensuring the correct documentation is submitted as part of the appeals process. This presentation will review the appeals process and the potential role of a dosimetrist in this process. Discussions will focus on dosimetry procedures and the appropriate supporting documentation to be submitted in the event of a payer denial.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the concept of denial management and the impact on a cancer center. Understand the appeals Process and timeline
  • Discuss the dosimetrist’s role in the appeals process
  • Review required documentation elements for dosimetry services and treatment modalities
  • Understand impact of lacking or incomplete documentation
  • Identify denial trends that may be avoidable
